Favorite work of Jewish (you define it!) literature
Some of my most recent favorite works of Jewish literature:

The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak
The Entertainer and the Dybbuk, by Syd Fleischman
God's To Do List, by Ron Wolfson
The Days of Awe, by Hugh Nissenson
About Me:
I am a writer of young adult fiction. I hold an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts.

I have much to be grateful for.

My first novel, Head Case, published by Roaring Brook Press in September 2007, was named a 2008 QUICK PICK FOR RELUCTANT READERS. It is the story of 17-year-old Frank, who sustains a complete C3-4 spinal cord injury after driving drunk. He kills two people in the accident. The novel chronicles his life after being released from the hospital.

The novel is about forgiveness. It is about accepting what you have done and who you are. If you know someone just learning to drive, this book would make a great discussion without being didactic.

GREAT NEWS: I just sold my second novel, BEYOND LUCKY, a middle grade novel about luck, heroism and friendship, to Dial Books. It will be released in Summer 2011. (I am beyond thrilled!)

If you are an aspiring writer of children's fiction and are interested in taking a class or coming to a retreat, email me! I organize an annual writing retreat at Vermont College. In September, I will be teaching a Manuscript Review class on writers.com. When I have time, I speak to students and writers. I also review books for Jewish Book World and help writers develop marketing plans for their books. I also drink coffee, read plays, and eat dark chocolate. I hang with my kids. One of these days, I will clear off my desk.

Hi Sarah,

Jill and I are extremely lucky to have found each other, and our collaboration is different than most, we've discovered. We do everything together, side by side, except for occasional research -- we'll split up and then regroup and share what we've uncovered separately.

We plot, write and revise side by side, taking turns sitting at the keyboard while the partner sits alongside. While we write a scene, we'll be speaking the sentences aloud -- often saying the same new name (usually unusual name) for a character (doo doo doo doo) or spitting out the exact unusual word at the same time.

Our brains are linked, we are extremely sympatico, and we have fun working together.

Editors have told us often that the writing is seamless, that we "speak" with a single voice.

Dear Sarah,
How nice to open my email and see that you chose me as a friend. I like it. How exciting that your book has been chosen for the BBYA. Good luck! and hope you had lots of nice chocolates over Thanksgiving.

Hi Sarah,
Does Head Case have Jewish content? If so, I hope you've asked Roaring Brook to submit it to the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee. They are still considering c2007 titles.
