- Karen Tintori is a multi-published, bestselling author of fiction and non-fiction who writes solo and with her best friend of 26 years, Jill Gregory.
Their recent Jewish thriller from St. Martin's,THE BOOK OF NAMES, is a religious thriller based on the Kabbalah. It has sold to 20 foreign countries (some at auction) and spent 19 weeks on the German bestseller lists. The novel is based on the Talmudic legend of the Lamed Vovniks, the thirty-six righteous souls for whom God continues to keep the world in existence -- look for the paperback version in February, 2008.
Karen and Jill's next Jewish thriller for St. Martins is THE ILLUMINATION.
UNTO THE DAUGHTERS, Karen's nonfiction title released in July, 2007, is a memoir about her Sicilian-American family . While doing genealogy she uncovered a deep-held family secret -- an honor killing that happened in Detroit in 1920.
TRAPPED: THE 1909 CHERRY MINE DISASTER (Atria 2002, Washington Square Press 2003) was her first solo book, a highly acclaimed narrative non-fiction account of the U.S.'s third worst mining disaster and its worst mine fire -- an historic tragedy that triggered sweeping changes in mine safety and labor law and prompted the first application of workers compensation in our country's history. TRAPPED has been optioned for feature film and The Chicago Tribune named it one of their favorite books of 2002.
Karen and Jill's first novel, SOMETHING BORROWED, SOMETHING BLUE, Doubleday, 1993 and written as Jillian Karr, was made into a CBS TV-movie starring Connie Sellecca, Twiggy, Ken Howard and Dina Merrill.
Their first collaboration, WHAT DOES BEING JEWISH MEAN? -- READ-ALOUD RESPONSES TO QUESTIONS JEWISH CHILDREN ASK ABOUT HISTORY, CULTURE AND RELIGION, Simon & Schuster (1991) is a non-fiction book written with Rabbi E. B. Freedman as Jan Greenberg and Karen A. Katz.
Tintori graduated from Wayne State University, where she majored in journalism and covered the campus for the New York Times. Though she attended Catholic school from K-12, at 24 she was converted to Judaism by an Orthodox bet din (court of three rabbis). Now a Conservative Jew, she is currently serving on the board of trustees of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, Southfield, MI, where she was also president of the 600-member Sisterhood. She also serves on the International Board of Womens League for Conservative Judaism and is an active member of International Thriller Writers and Novelists Inc.
Tintori lives in Michigan with her husband of thirty-five years. They have two sons and a daughter-in-law and have recently become dual citizens of Italy.

Do you still live near Detroit? I live in Sylvania (OH), a suburb of Toledo. However, I spent a lot of time with family in Southfield, Oak Park and Farmington as a child. Some of my cousins were founding members of the Humanistic shul in Southfield (Rabbi Wein?).
